Experience Exuma

If you’re lucky enough to be on Great Exuma during the Bahamian Music & Heritage Festival, scheduled March 12 – 14, 2015 at Regatta Park in George Town, here’s a reason to keep your feet firmly locked on land, at least for a little while. Now in its 10th year, this three-day festival celebrates the soul-stirring culture and music of this tropical paradise, keeping cherished customs alive and sharing them with newcomers. One of Exuma’s most popular annual events, this fun, family-friendly event features singing, storytelling and poetry reading, as well as some very Bahamian culinary contests like sugar cane peeling, onion peeling and conch cracking. A heritage corner highlights Bahamian history, arts and crafts (don’t miss the wood and conch shell carvings) and cuisine. Music is the backbone of this incredible fest, which kicks off with a gospel extravaganza with local and visiting performers on Thursday and continues with popular local and national musicians over the weekend.
